Well, I guess Laura Brannigan did pretty damn well with such material, but Girl Like This is just way too predictable, sophomoric, formulaic, and corporate. Roppé has a voice alright, and potentially a very powerful one, but she never cuts loose. The promo lit says she used to belt out Led Zeppelin and Janis…so what happened? The bandwidth of the songs is about an inch thick but should be miles. Matt Embree momentarily (one cut) jives things up, but even that cut, Free, is as homogenous as the rest of the dozen. When you go from blues and bluesrock to TopCorp 40…well, you better hope you're Barry Manilow, God help ya, or Paul Williams because the road there is littered with the corpses of millions who thought they were and found out too late otherwise. Much better to be yourself.
