Chasing the arc of the creative process is an arduous, yet tenuous path. Simultaneously taking control of the entire recording process is a daunting pursuit for any artist. Thus the ebb and flow of Larkin's elegant, if at times inconsistent, Watch The Sky.

A prayerful stateliness sustains this disc's opening three tracks. The hypnotic Phone Message; the pristine Cover Me and the hushed celebration that is Hallelujah are the songs Larkin's following live for: Meticulously crafted and performed portraits of the artist living life as it comes at her.

Even though it fits the mood sonically, the cranky, Ani-like Beautiful breaks the spell set by the previous, above mentioned songs. Except for that sworn pursuit of the wily creative process, I have no idea why the bluesy ambience of Hollywood makes an appearance on anything but a bootleg. Being just small steps up from filler status, the same can be said for the pretty, trance-inducing Bound Brook and repetitive Traveling Alone. Gratefully and gracefully, All Souls Day, Here, and especially the resonant simplicity of Waterside return to where Larkin and the her listeners began Watch The Sky: Tracking the individual's physical, emotional, and spiritual twists and turns through the minutes that make this life a glorious thing.
