A review written for the Folk & Acoustic Music Exchange

I'm going to catch a lot of flack for this but I must admit that I don't hear what the reviewers at No Depression, Harp, Acoustic Guitar Magazine, Uncut, PopMatters, Americana UK or Bob Harris of BBC Radio 2 hear.

Yes, Villalobos has that earthy, jangly 'Sheryl Crow exiled on Main Street' sound. Yes, she has that rough edged voice singin' hard won/hard lost lyrics. Yes, she has that DIY attitude and isn't afraid to strut it.

But, and long time FAME readers will know this is a big thing for me, I couldn't pick any one of her songs out of a playlist. If we were driving in a car or sitting at bar and you said "Oh, that's the new one from Gina Villalobos" I'd shrug and listen for something else.

I'm more than willing to take my share of the blame for this. Hell, it's all subjective anyway. I like what she does and what she does she does well. I'm just going to move onto something that resonatess with me.
