Though it leans a little too heavily on the lilting and gentle side of Nickel Creek, Reasons Why (The Very Best) is a wonderful entry into the seamless hybrid of neotrad and newgrass that is the music of violinist Sara Watkins, mandolinist Chris Thile, and guitarist Sean Watkins. Add two live tracks, a seven video DVD, and the impeccable timing of the music industry, and you have yourself and excellent, no-brainer holiday gift.

Culled from their three acclaimed discs, Reasons Why includes the luminous The Lghthouse's Tale, Helena, Jealous of The Moon, The Smoothie Song and a live, hot, hot, hot 9-minute The Fox recorded in November, 2000. With the band planning an extended hiatus to recharge by the end of 2007, this may be Nickel Creek's last disc for a while.
