A review written for the Folk & Acoustic Music Exchange

Most reviewers won't tell you this but sometimes we crash into a brick wall. We listen to a disc, put it aside. Listen again, put it aside. Listen, put it aside again. It's almost like our actions sometimes speak louder than our words.

I like this Vancouver, BC based quintet's quirky lyricism and devil-may-care attitude towards mixing bluegrass with folk rock while adding sparkling musical interplay and Celtic flavorings. Bassist and main songwriter Chris Jonat enjoys a good story as much as the next guy (lead-off track Bobby Banjo, Save For You and the title track are excellent examples). All the while fellow Clumsies Andrea Lewis - violin, vocals, Jason Homey - guitar, mandolin, and ferocious banjo, Gordon Robert - drums and Trevor Rogers - vocals, carouse and cajole.

Like I said, I like Smart Kid a lot, I just can't quite put my finger on it or offer up some bon mot of pop punditry. Whether they truly are clumsy in matters of the backseat and the boudoir, I don't know. They know their way around their songs and their instruments though.
